Our Scientific Committee

AluWatch has engaged a Scientific Committee chaired by Prof. Philippe Chalmin, which delivers an independent recommendation on a wide array of strategic environmental issues. The Committee is playing a notable role in determining the actions of AluWatch while ensuring the scientific relevance and coherence of our organisation’s work.


Philippe Chalmin

A graduate of HEC, holder of the French agrégation (highest academic distinction in France) in history and of a PhD in Literature, Philippe Chalmin is Professor of Economic History at Paris-Dauphine University where he runs the Master in International Affairs.

A Member of the Council of Economic Analysis appointed by the French Prime Minister, he is the Founding Chairman of Cyclope, the main European research institute on commodity markets which annually publishes the Cyclope report on the economy and global markets.

In October 2010, Prof. Chalmin was appointed Chairman of the Observatory on Formation of Food Product’s Prices and Margins (Ministry of Agriculture and Ministry of Economy and Finance).


Yves Jégourel

Yves Jégourel studied at University of Nantes and Middlesex University of London. He got a doctorate at University Montesquieu Bordeaux IV, where he now runs the Master in Finance Banking and International Trade. Also a lecturer at Toulouse Business School, Prof. Jégourel is a senior fellow researcher at OCP Policy Center.

Prof. Jégourel conducted numerous studies on international finance and financial risk management, and now specializes in studying investment funds strategies between cultivating performance and extra-financial motivations (sovereign wealth funds, solidarity funds, ethical funds). He also intervenes in influential national newspapers and conferences.


Gilles Rémy

Gilles Rémy is the CEO of CIFAL since 1995. The only French services company to operate throughout the whole Central Asia zone, CIFAL ranks among the oldest and most influential French international trade companies, and specializes on the energy sector (nuclear, oil, gas, electricity).

Based in Moscow since 1992, he leads the development of CIFAL in whole Central Asia, settling representation bureaus and subsidiaries (Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Kirghizstan, Uzbekistan…)

Gilles Rémy has been an Advisor of French Foreign Trade for Central Asia since 1994. He presides the French-Turkmen Chamber of Commerce. He also presided the OSCI (Organisation professionnelle des opérateurs spécialisés du commerce international) from 2006 to 2013, gathering key firms for French Foreign Trade.


Jacques Suart

Jacques Suart was the head of Corporate Communications of Elior from 1999 to 2015. Since 1985, he runs the “Profession Communiquer” seminar of the Master in Political Science of University Paris I (Sorbonne), where he initiated the “Communication breakfasts of Sorbonne university”.

He led communications and PR strategies of the Ministry of Equipment and Transports cabinet (1986-1988) and DATAR (Délégation interministérielle à l’aménagement du territoire et à l’attractivité régionale) (1988-89). Moving towards the private sector, he became the head of communications of the Schneider group (1989-1992), Lafarge (1992-1998), and the Pinault Printemps Redoute group (1998-1999).

Mr Suart was the President of Entreprises & Médias, a professional association gathering heads of communications of great groups from 2005 to 2009, and remains an active board member as of today.


Jean-Léon Vandoorne

A graduate of HEC and Northwest University School of Journalism (Illinois), Jean-Léon Vandoorne was a journalist at AFP in Paris, Geneva and Washington.

In 1989, he became head of the Industry department at Les Echos, n°1 French daily newspaper on business and finance. In 1994, he became Managing Editor and Editor in Chief of L’Usine Nouvelle, key French national weekly newspaper specialized in industry matters. Eventually, he joined the GISI group as Deputy CEO and Managing Editor on Industry, covering a wide array of newspapers: L’Usine Nouvelle, LSA, L’Echo touristique, L’Argus de l’Assurance

Mr Vandoorne now provides editorial and strategic expertise to international firms, leading conferences and debates on an international scale.
